Our Mission
The mission of the Refugee Reunification Project* is to help refugee families reunite safely in the United States of America. A refugee receives asylum in the United States if she has been persecuted and tortured by her home government or those who cannot be controlled by the government on the basis of her race, religion, nationality, social group, and/or political opinion.
Once a refugee has received asylum in the United States, she may apply for travel visas so that her spouse and children can settle in this country. These travel visas are valid for a limited time during which refugees must scramble to raise funds for the one-way plane tickets. When a refugee is unable to raise money, the travel visas expire and the family remains separated, sometimes permanently. Too many families are kept apart because the costs of one way plane tickets are prohibitive. All too often, spouses and children remain stranded in the most war-torn, devastated areas of the world.
The Refugee Reunification Project seeks to ensure that no refugee family is kept apart due to an inability to fund one-way plane tickets to safety. The Project is the only initiative in the United States that seeks to meet the urgent financial needs of refugee families seeking reunification. The success of the Project depends on your help. Your contributions will provide urgently needed assistance for plane tickets, and will empower refugee families to achieve their American Dream.
*The Refugee Reunification Project is a Component Fund of The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven, Inc., Greater New Haven's charitable endowment and largest grantmaker. As such, donors can be assured that their gifts will have the benefit of being administered and invested efficiently by one of the oldest and most experienced community foundation in the nation.
